The first edition is what I used to gain a handle on Ruby. The content was to the point. Its as potent and important to Ruby Programmers as K&R to C or Thinking in Java to well, Java.
I started, seriously, Ruby in Oct 2003 when I purchased my Powerbook. The goal was to catch a new language by its tail and learn a new OS. OS X has done me well and Ruby has been a great jewel in my career!! This book brought that learning curve way down for me!
The second edition brings in Ruby 1.8 and its well worth the investement. Bruce Tate made the point, severals months ago, Java was popular 10 years or so after C++ and now Ruby is on that 10 year mark and here we go again! Applying Ruby to Web Develoment does make sense with the right consideration. (FYI: Bruce makes a more compelling point in his book "
From Java to Ruby" which I believe is a good read for anyone, Managers, Execs and developers alike to read and use as plausible research to see if Ruby is for the team).
The "
Programming Ruby" presentes Ruby in the quickest manner to get you productive. From Ruby installation, rdoc, language and finding out how to work through arrays, classes and the general Ruby world provides you the leraning of you to learn how to fish with in the first chapter.
Its a great start, and reviewing thus further is almost fruitless. If you are going to start Ruby get the book. I keep a copy on every desk that I code from.
