First off, this is an excellent primer to Maven 1.0. Unfortunately, this book is already out of date, though I do believe it has value. However, if you have not used Maven yet and are thinking of using Maven 2.0.2 this books is still a valid place to start.
The Developer's Notebook format is an easy read and it gets straight to the point. Immediately identifying what Maven is and what it is not. The only issue is this edition is unaware of the changes in Maven 2.0.2 and may offer some confusion. Nonetheless, reading the Maven website and following the GettingStarted will get you on track. This is an excellent read and can be read in about 4 hours.
The books explain that Maven is a project management and comprehension tool providing a way to share resources across projects. Utilizing plugins from ANT to JUnit, Maven facilitates the developments teams organization in terms of libraries, unit testing, and projects. The hands on labs and explanation provide any developer with working knowledge of Maven resulting in real world direction toward getting started with a current Maven installation or first time setup, effectively by the end of the book.
