Is that a Safari in your Windows?

posted 12 June 2007, Tuesday

Apple has Launched Safari for WiIndows.  The timing could be just right as Firefox seems to be a little fat suffering from crashes and just doesnt seem to handle Windows Media very well.  As Explorer 7.0 is a little buggy and the tab implementation is rather odd.

In walks Safari  and what a time for it to join the Windows platform.  It could work.

With Leopard on the cusp of release, the iPhone as an encore this month, Apple may have enough eyes on these events to give Safari half a chance to thrive.  As iPhone's browser of choice is Safari. Anyone can see, if Apple sells 10 Million iPhones (or close), there are  20 Million pairs of eyes glaring upon Safari.  Its all about the numbers.

So, Safari, as I see it, is placed well in the browser game. So, on to the story.

I use Firefox, exclusively, however, in the past 6 months, when watching IPTV delivered from a Windows Media Stream Firefox, on MAC OS X just doesn't cut it.  It flips the viewing area and offers a aggravating experience.  So, when viewing the same streams, Safari with FlipForMac works effortlessly.

So, as you might guess, my patience with Safari on Windows would have a very low-tolerance as my expectations are very high for Apple and it's browser.  As I launched the Safari Windows setup, as usual, effortless install.  But I immediately went to Market News First to check out the Windows Stream.  No Windows Media, but did that stop Safari?  Not on your life, it was a quick announcement that Windows Media needed an plugin installation to continue.  I confirmed it and wala, Safari came to life with a streaming video.  Safari, Firefox and Explorer all presenting on the browsers below:

With the private browsing features, tabs and other Safari likable features, its a browser that can survive.  If it were to get a proper plugin/addon area I would think this would make it more sexy to the world. Addons, like Firebug, Venkman and other tools make Firefox more useful and the choice of most developers.  Open source is good, Safari's is a contender and the wars have just begun, again...

Oh, by the way, PNG's work correctly in Safari.
