EMAIL Notifications to your Cell Phone

posted 11 January 2009, Sunday

Sending notifications to your phone via SMS is a very valuable tool.  In the trackback article "Send a text Message from your email " I described how to send emails to your phone via SMS.  I use these "SMS" email addresses to send myteam and myself notifications of site details via an email forwarded.  The email forward, a normal email address wich forwards to any email to a list  of emails. In this case, a list of Cell Phone SMS Email Addresses. Each team member's individual cell phones with the proper reference to their cellular carrier's SMS email domain is entered as an email address for the forwarding. The result, the team is collectively notified.  It's a nice solution.

Well as Time changes and SMS matures, marketing plans are updated and scaling of the netowrk occurs. things jsut don't stay the same  Alas, the primary email domain unfortunately also undergoes modification.  For example, ATT no longer use phonenumber#@attwireless.com, phone#@mmode.com and now use phonenumber@txt.att.net.  For that very reason, I decided list some of the recent changes.

With Verizon's purchase of Alltell we'll see changes in ALLTEL's email target email domain to Verizon's soon enough.

Below are the newest updates for the majors.  The trackback shows you a comprehensive list of all the phone companies and should be accurate.  When there are changes add a comment and we'll keep it all up to date!!

Knowing the correct email address for the cellular's carrier allows you to send email to any cell phone as a text message.  The format is [PHONE NUMBER]@[Cell Carrier's Mail Domain Name].  Once you are armed with this information any website that can email you a notification of an event can reach your cell phone instantly through SMS and its signatured SMS EMAIL ADDRESS.

AT&T: phonenumber@txt.att.net

UPDATED AT&T April 1, 2011:

AT&T (formerly Cingular)
[10-digit phone number]@txt.att.net
Example: 2125551212@txt.att.net
