Delete Cookies in IE or Firefox

posted 6 June 2008, Friday

From time to time browsers and servers get a little confused and cookies become out of sorts leaving the user logging into a website but not really getting the user to the expected pages.  In many cases this is not an issue and can be easily rectified by deleting the site's cookie.

The quick way is to blast all cookies or surgically remove the offending cookie by site name.  Below is a quick instruction an how to remove cookies in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

The following instruction will solve your problem.  Doing a napalm cleansing of your cookie pace will remove your saved settings for all of your sites that you have previously visited. NOTE: This is a NAPALM CLEANSING APPROACH

Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE)

  1.   From IE's application menu click on the "Tools" menu.
  2.   Select "Internet Options"
  3.   Click on the "General" tab
  4.   Under the heading "Temporary Internet files," click on "Delete Cookies..."
  5.   Click "OK" for the "Delete all cookies in the Temporary Internet Files folder?" prompt.1
  6.   Click "OK" to exit.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. From Firefox's application
    • IN Windows click on the "Tools" menu
    • IN OS X click on  "Preferences" menu item
  2. Select
    • IN Windows click on the "Options" menu
    • IN OS X click on  "Privacy" menu item
  3. Click on the "Privacy" icon on the the top of the dialog2.
  4. Select "Show Cookies"2
  5. To clear all cookies select "Remove All Cookies"
  6. Exit the dialog

This is more of a surgical strike which is less destructive to your daily browser usage. Here we simply select a specific cookie and delete it and solve the problem at hand.

Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE)

  1. From IE's application menu click on the "Tools" menu.
  2. Select "Internet Options"
  3. Click on the "General" tab
  4. Click on "Settings" Button
  5. Click on "View Files" Button
  6. Though it is crude, one can find a specific cookie for deletion in the format below:
    1. Cookie:name@WebsiteDomainName
    2. Example Cookie:administrator@blog-city.com3
  7. Select the file and right mouse button click "Delete"
  8. Close the dialog and click "OK" and exit.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. From Firefox's application4
    • IN Windows click on the "Tools" menu
    • IN OS X click on  "Preferences" menu item
  2. Select
    • IN Windows click on the "Options" menu
    • IN OS X click on  "Privacy" menu item
  3. Click on the "Privacy" icon on the the top of the dialog.
  4. Select "Show Cookies"
  5. In the Search box enter a search criteria
    • Example: "blog-city.com"
    • All Blog-city.com cookies
  6. Simply select the cookie to be deleted
  7. Click on the "Remove Cookie" button
  8. Exit the dialog

1 This is a NAPALM CLEANSING APPROACH

2 Same for Windows and OS X

3 This folder is accessbile outside of the the IE Browser interface at C:\Documents and Settings\jes\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files PLEASE EXERCISE CAUTION IN THIS DIRECTORY

4 This is the same menus until the user wants to delete the specific cookie
