Comparison Sprint (EVDO) Verizon (EVDO) & Cingular (HSDPA)

posted 29 April 2006, Saturday
Just found a very nice comparison of EVD and the three US carries Verizon, Cingular and Sprint.

EVDO HSDPA Comparison

EVDO Evolution Data Only,Evolution Data Optimized, often abbreviated as EVDO, EV-DO, EvDO, 1xEV-DO or 1xEvDO is a wireless radio broadband data protocol being adopted by many CDMA mobile phone providers in Japan, Korea, Israel, the United States, and Canada as part of the CDMA2000 standard. 1xEVDO is pronounced "One Ex-E:- Vee-Dee-Oh." It is commonly refered in the industry as DO (Dee-Oh). ...

HSDPA High-Speed Downlink Packet Access or HSDPA is a mobile telephony protocol. Also called 3.5G (or "3½G"). High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) is a packet-based data service in W-CDMA downlink with data transmission up to 8-10 Mbit/s (and 20 Mbit/s for MIMO systems) over a 5MHz bandwidth in WCDMA downlink. ...

I currently use a Sprint Card. Connection is fast, almost instant. haven't had a droped connectition sence installation. and there covorage is great. Speed... stays around 600k, they claim averages around 1500k.

Drivers and connect manager are great. they also have a good developer program.

I have to agree, I use Verizon's EVDO and it is solid. However, HSDPA I have also used and it appears to have a throttle on its bandwidth. It still fast but the past year's kinks were being worked out of the system so stability was an issue in the past year. As of late I have had no issues with Cingular's network (past 6 months).

At this time, if I were to buy new I would lean towards HSDPA as its capable of faster speeds and a newer technology. It is not widely deployed which maybe a consideration for most travelers. My choice is due to my area being HSDPA hot.

However, in the next few years we will see the deployment grow nationally and internationally.
