Do Blogs Offer Value To Corporate Communications?

posted 14 February 2006, Tuesday
How are corporations solving practical communications issues in areas of human resources, corporate policy, HIPAA, Sarbanes-Oxley, press releases or even the company picnic?  What is the use of internal corporate blogs in the business world today?  Are companies taking advantage of what an internal blog can accomplish?  Simply, what are the practical applications for blogs in the corporate world?

In my current experience, internal company blogs get the message across to the employee touching on areas such as charity events to the changes in Employee Benefits.  With all the aggregators such as SAGE (Firefox Extension) or Safari's Built-in RSS Feeder  getting the word out instantly to the employee desktop is an effortless task.  Gone is the company memo through email.  Response to these news items in the form of private or public can provide an immediate pulse on the situation reflecting on the Corporation's outlook on the issue as a whole.  A lack of response on an issue offers a complete communication of the atmosphere of an issue.  It's quite a living vehicle of communication in terms of understanding the corporate mindset.

Blogging technology allows announcements of any sort involving the corporation, it gives an immediate avenue to propagate the message to the employees.  Furthermore, this technology provides the flexibility of taking the time for management to think through the issues instead of rushing to judgment.  The result is a proper, responsible and accurate communication deployment to every desktop within the premises, in a timely fashion.  This can be sent to corporate aggregators with live and secure content strategies.  Many responsible and practical applications exist in this space, and I am sure we could engage in this discussion for hours.

So, I would like to ask for your assistance on this very topic and would solicit your answer to the questions following this request.   You can respond at the email below or comment to this blog entry. Either way I would greatly appreciate your input.

Does your company use blogs?  If so, what blog software is used? In what capacity is it used?  How are blogs being put to practical use?  What are the pros and cons of corporate blogs?  If you are not using them, do you think you could or should? How would you employ blogs in a corporate setting?   What values do you see for blogs  in the corporate space?  Also, would podcasts and videocasts be as valuable or more so in this area?

All responses can be directed to SOS or comment to this entry.  Thank you for your participation! SOS...

My company does not use blogs for communicating with employees yet. However the extensive use of intranets(this is not new) and Wikis is to be noted.

However from the occassional surveys that they conduct, the feedback they seek from employees and the wide adoption of wikis I believe soon we will be adopting blog technology. In my view only the adoption of blog as technology is missing. But whatever is purported to be accomplished by the use of blog is being done through similar technologies.

Essentially the need for communication with employees, the value of their feedback and the importance of employee to employee(peer level) communication is increasingly being recognized and encouraged.

I am using this blog to establish a community of users and developers to build better systems in oil and gas.

I find this blog has such value that it is the priority for me. This has completely upended the methods of doing work and the approach that I have to this business.

I am of the opinion that corporate blogs are only scratching the surface at this time. Much more will happen once blogs are well established and acceptance of the medium is complete.

I did use Blogging as the main methodology of CLEAR communication between Onshore-Offshore teams. We used to Blogs & Wiki the MOMs on the Private Blogs and the Other side will verify the validity of action items and make sure every one is on the same page. Using Blogs also reduced the dependency on the Resource other side for Full Duplex communication.
